Calibration Standard Instruments MDM-TA3 Time Align Monitors by E.M. Long

These are 3 way, dual woofer versions of the 2 way CSI MDM-TA2s.  These monitors used the same drivers found in the MDM-4 monitors (which were not time aligned).  This pair is from the original owner, who operated a small smoke and pet free studio doing original compositions for film and video.  

PLEASE NOTE:  The MDM-TA3 woofers have been refoamed, swept and tested.   The large O-rings on the woofers were re-attached to the outer mount with rubber cement.  The CSI woofers were constructed with a glossy doping compound over a paper cone, a foam surround and plain paper dust cap.  We’ve rebuilt several sets of CSI monitors and in every case the woofer cones showed some deformation at the surround seam.  This has not affected the sound at all.  Up close the cones appear bumpy and uneven, but they perform perfectly.  These cabinets have been swept for any rattles, whistles, air leaks, etc., and the low frequency output is tight and robust, well below 45Hz. 

Other than the new woofer surrounds these monitors are original as far as we can tell.  There were 2 pieces of foam on each cabinet that were positioned to minimize cabinet reflections and improve the imaging.  Both have disintegrated from age.  One foam piece was fitted into the tweeter cutout, and the other was a beveled strip of foam that ran the length of the set back between the plane of the woofers and the mid and high frequency drivers (See photos for a B/W picture marked for reference.).    

The tweeter screen covers were reattached to the drivers with rubber cement.
